What’s in Your Wallet iPod?

Beanie revived this by correctly answering 3 more. I think at this point I'm going to call it quits and just reveal the rest, so if you're interested, just scroll down for the answers (in bold). Thanks to everyone who played along!

I've moved this back up top to remind people to play along - there's still plenty of songs left! I won't be around this weekend, so this is the only thing you'll have from me to amuse you. It's not much, but hey - it's all I've got to offer. If none of my songs strike a chord with you (ba-dum-bum) - Stare Decisis has one up over at her place. You might also visit LawMommy's or E.Spat's.

Inspired by the dreaded movie meme and the fact that it seemed to be inexplicably popular, I thought I’d try it again, but with a twist. Instead of favorite movies, let’s give it a shot with song lyrics. Since my iPod automatically tells me what songs I listen to most, it should be pretty easy (read: not time consuming) to come up with my Top 25 and pick out lyrics. And since it’s right there for me, I haven't just cherry picked songs other people might think are “cool.” Here’s your opportunity to see exactly what LQ listens to. It’s eclectic. It’s outdated. It’s dorky.

Just like me.

My Instructions:
A. If you’ve got an iPod or similar technology, copy your Top 25 Most Played.
B. Then pick a lyric from each.
C. Post the lyrics on your blog.
D. Have commenters guess what the song is.
E. Either strike out the lyric once it has been correctly identified or place the guesser’s user name directly after the lyric.
F. Extra points for knowing the artist. Let’s not go overboard and try to figure out albums. I’m not even sure I could figure some of them out. Heck, some of the lyrics would stump me and I'm the one posting them.
G. NO INTERNET ASSISTANCE.

Song 1
Everybody knows that the world is full of stupid people.
Otis knows that this is Banditos by the Refreshments. And I know that even though I didn't tag him for this last night, I fully expect him to do his own version. Did you hear that Otis??? You're on the hook now too.

Song 2
Can't sing but I've got soul.

Beanie got this one. Frankly, I'm surprised that no one picked up on the fact that this was Elevation from U2 sooner. But mostly, it tells me that G, my brother-in-law, has not been reading lately.

Song 3
Well I guess you left me with some feathers in my hand.

Stare Decisis weighs in with the correct answer of Angels of the Silence - Counting Crows.

Song 4
It never seems to matter, what we fight about.
I'm the one who winds up down for the count.

Ok, I'm not totally surprised that no one got this. It's Let Me Up (I've Had Enough) off the album Ledbetter Heights by Kenny Wayne Shepherd. If you like Stevie Ray Vaughan, you'd like this. It's an older album (1995), so you could probably pick it up cheap.

Song 5
A boy tries hard to be a man.
His mother takes him by his hand.

Beanie also knew that this was U2 - I Will Follow. Didn't I tell you all that this list had a bunch of pairs?

Song 6*
You snooze, you lose.
Well I have snost and lost.

I would have been pretty surprised if someone *did* get this one. From the Veronica Mars soundtrack, it's I Hear the Bells - Mike Doughty. BUT I would like it even without the totally made up word (which always makes me smile.)

*In the interest of full disclosure. I substituted one here. The song that is usually in its place doesn’t have lyrics – at least none that I’ve ever heard. Mr. Q has a CD of Marching Band tunes from the only university we both attended. It’s sort of a little celebratory thing – like when I got accepted to law school or he got promoted, we blasted it. But trust me, the song on the list gets listened to plenty, so I'm sure it's about to break into the Top 25.

Song 7
When I was driving once I saw this painted on a bridge:
“I don't want the world, I just want your half.”

Correctly ID'd by E.Spat, this is Ana Ng by They Might Be Giants.

Song 8*
If you change your mind, I’m the first in line.
*Note – this is not the original artist’s version. Not that it really matters since I'll lose cool points either way. Hint - the artist is on here two other times.

Jim's right! It *is* Take a Chance on Me - the Erasure version. C'mon Jim - admit it - you knew some of the other Erasure songs too, but just didn't want to be greedy...

Song 9
To run where the devil would fear to tread
Got to put your money where your heart is.

Beanie also got Part 3 of the Erasure trilogy. It is, indeed, Yahoo! It's probably all my fault no one got this sooner. I'm not even sure I would have recognized it by the lyric I picked. Sorry :S
Song 10
I'll take you where you
Really need to be.

Jim again. What You Need - INXS.

Song 11
I'm driving home on empty streets.
I think I put my shirt on backwards.

A hearty welcome to Froggie, who correctly identified this as Are You Out There by Dar Williams. If you're not familiar with Dar Williams, get yourself out your local purveyor of CD's (or whatever download service you like) and pick something of hers up. "Out There Live" is a good starter (though I can't stand that Yoko Ono song.) Those of you already familiar with Dar Williams should recognize the lyrics from one other song here as well. I've noticed that I tend to work in pairs.

Song 12
There’s something about you girl
That makes me sweat.

E.Spat's right again! Need You Tonight - INXS.

Song 13
But I don’t like to compete, or talk street, street, street.
I can pick up the best from the party animal.

This is Left to My Own Devices by the Pet Shop Boys.
Told you I wasn't cool. I blame Mr. Q - it was his cd.

Song 14
You see the girl in the pretty white picture.
Well it's never what it really seems.

I'm not entirely sure how this one even made it into my Top 25. It's not that I don't like it, but I just wasn't aware that I was listening to it that often. This is Four Leaf Clover by Abra Moore off of one of the Lilith Fair compilations.

Song 15
He's not vicious or malicious.
Just de-lovely and delicious.

Otis again with a correct answer of Groove is in the Heart by Deee-Lite.

Song 16
I bought a pack of Camels, a burrito and a Barq's.

Correctly identified by Jim - I Feel Lucky - Mary Chapin Carpenter.

Song 17
And this girl listens to the band play
She says "where have you been?
I've been lyin right here on the floor"

CM comes through with the correct answer of Hangin' Around by one of my all time favorite bands - the Counting Crows. Even if are occasionally on the whiny side.

Song 18
Baby’s got my heart and my baby's got my mind.
But tonight the sweet devil’s got my soul.

Yes, Otis is mostly correct - it is indeed, Melissa Etheridge with Bring Me Some Water. However, this is the super-cool live version with Joan Osborne, but there's no way anyone could have known that from just the lyrics.

Song 19
I shake my little tushy on the catwalk

To my eternal shame...yes, it's I'm Too Sexy by Right Said Fred. Though E.Spat knew it, so I guess she's just as bad as I am. Of course, it's probably not in her Top 25....

Song 20
“Forgive me if I seem out of line”
Then she whipped out a gun
Tried to blow me away

Otis demonstrates that his musical taste is at least as varied as my own by correctly identifying this as Dude (Looks Like a Lady) by Aerosmith.

Song 21
And he knew what they needed- they needed donuts

This is another Dar Williams tune - Party Generation.

Song 22
I try to discover
A little something to make me sweeter
Oh baby refrain from breaking my heart

Ladies and Gentlemen, we have a tie! I didn't believe it at first, but Stare Decisis and Kristine actually posted the same correct answer at exactly the same time: A Little Respect - Erasure. There's one more (albeit somewhat obscure) Erasure song left on the list.

Song 23
Third verse same as the first
Only this time the sugar hits you in reverse

I admit I would have been surprised if anyone had gotten this one. It's Sugarcane from the Space Monkeys. I violated one of my cardinal rules and bought the cd for just this song - thus reinforcing the reason I had for establishing that rule in the first place. Absent one other song, the rest of the cd really wasn't my style at all.

Song 24
If ever again, a greeting I send to you,
Short and sweet to the soul is all I intend.

Welcome to Lily Graypure! Please go check out her list over at Law School Virgin. She correctly identified this as We Used to Be Friends from the Dandy Warhols. I was really surprised Brian didn't get this one, given his love of Veronica Mars. You can find this song (and one of the others on this list - hint, hint) on the Veronica Mars soundtrack. I bought it for Mr. Q's birthday, though I don't know if he's been enjoying it as much as I have!

Song 25
He came to town like a midwinter storm
He rode through the fields so hansome and strong

Yeah....I think this one is on the list because of EC. She got really excited when she discovered it on the iPod, and listened to it over and over. (She's at that age.) It's Cotton Eye Joe by Rednex.

Who’s next? E.McPan has blogged her tunes before, so that makes her fair game. At the risk of getting all Jimmy Buffet songs, I’ll tag E.Spat, because I know she’s got a new iPod. Also, Shell is recently back from her world travels, so I’m counting on her wanting to join in all our reindeer internet games again. If anyone else wants to play along - feel free.

Comments:
Song 7 - Ana Ng by They Might Be Giants

Song 12 - Need You Tonight - INXS

Song 19 - I'm Too Sexy - Right Said Fred

I knew a few others, but didn't want to hog them all! :)

OK, I'll play, too.

Song 8 - Take a Chance On Me - since it's not tha ABBA version, it must be Erasure. (Yup, there goes what little remains of my cool points.)

Song 10 - What you need - INXS

Song 16 - I Feel Lucky - Mary Chapin Carpenter

Taking a page from ESpat, I'll stop with just 3. I think I know at least a few more.

Song 22 is Erasure again. Give a Little Respect.

#3 is Angels of the Silences - Counting Crows

#22 is A Little Respect - Erasure (The Innocents - one of my favorite albums of all time)

#1 is Banditos by the Refreshments
#15 is Groove is in the Heart by Deee-Lite
#18 is Bring Me Some Water by Melissa Etheridge
#20 is Dude (Looks Like a Lady) by Aerosmith

Not only is it not in my Top 25, it's not in my Ipod at all! :)

I can send it to you if you want. :)

*hanging head in shame* Yes, I knew song 22, as well. I'm not so sure about the obscure Erasure song.

For what it's worth, I didn't pay for the copy of I'm Too Sexy that's on my iPod. (I'm not sure that makes it any better, though.)

Haha Jim -

I didn't pay for my copy either. I think it was on some 80's compilation CD that Mr. Q bought.

The whole reason it's even in the Top 25 is because I would play it when law school got too stressful. It's hard to be unhappy when you've got a song that's just so...so...totally ridiculous.

So yeah, law school was obviously really really stressful for me.

I don't remember any lyrics...I'm never going to appear on Jeopardy. Anyhow, thanks for the tag. I'll have to look up my Itunes (since I don't have an IPOD).

24. is We Used to Be Friends by the Dandy Warhols.

17 is Hangin' Around by the Counting Crows.

#11 is "Are You Out There" by Dar Williams.

All the ones I knew are taken, but I gave you props and did one too...

here

Mine is up too... HERE

#2 - Elevation by U2
#5 - I Will Follow by U2
#9 - Yahoo by Erasure
